Public Speaking: Sermon #2

This is my second time speaking, I haven't watch the video yet (possible by the time you watch this I have). So I am not sure how well or bad I did, from watching the video, but in my mind from the speaking stand point, I feel like I did a little better.

Notes:

WHAT’S IN CONTROL

A. INTRODUCTION
-       Our main text is going to be in Luke 9:57
-       Think about something you really love, enjoying doing, and compare it to my story.
-       Personal Testimony
o   Brother wanted skateboard for Christmas, stupid, fell in love
o   Time spent skateboarding (a few hours to constantly) lunch break, after school.
**Level of Bible and Skateboard Importance in life – became and idol**
o   Moving
o   Contemplating not WOLBI
o   Began to Fall in love with God more, wanting to be a missionary, if skate able
o   God using skating for ministry
-       As we look into scripture I want to show you 3 men who wanted to follow Jesus.

B. WHAT IS IN THE WAY
-Read Luke 9:57-62
- All 3 Men must have wrong motives
-They have something in their life that is holding them back from fully committing.

1. First Man
- Read Luke 9:57-58
-Not willing to live with out normal necessities of life.
-Jesus didn’t always have a place to sleep or food to eat.

2. Second Man
            -Read Luke 9:59-60
-Why wouldn’t Jesus let him bury his father?
            -
-Father possibly not dead or close to death.
-Waiting for Inheritance

3. Third Man
            -Read Luke 9:61-62
-Why wouldn’t Jesus let him simply say goodbye to his family that seems normal
-Because he is hesitant to follow Christ
-He is “looking back” on things/life he would have had if he didn’t follow
-Jesus uses illustration of a plow to illustrate hard work in following him
-When you plow you have hard soil and resistance from rocks/roots
-Also when you follow Christ have resistance from people/prevent God’s work
-When you look back it is hard to stay in a straight line.
-When you “look back” you are contemplating quitting
-You start to wish you had the things and the life if you were not in ministry
-Start planning on a exit to get worldly desires
-Possibly didn’t want to leave past sin, accomplishments

Summary of 3 Men
-All 3 men had idols that where stopping them from serving the Lord.
-They preferred what the world had to offer, over what God had in store
-What is keeping you from following God? Fear, giving things up, normal way of life…

C. REMOVING SELF
1. Deny Self
-Background of getting disciples – cast net on other side

-Luke 5:11
“So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”

-Matthew 10:38-39
“And anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
-Are you willing to lose your life for Christ, or are you going to hold on to your life.

CONCLUSION
-Read Luke 10:2-3
-Look at the emphasis on the word “Go!” exclamation point.
-There is a need in the harvest, are you willing to put aside the things that are holding you back? Do you want what the world has to offer, or the life God has prepared for us?
